Damon Freed’s paintings are a gift of joy and insight, their apparent simplicity as sophisticated as a Paris night. Damon has art in his DNA. He grew up in an artist’s family nourished by paint and color as others are by home cooking. Art talk was as everyday as dinner conversation. However, make no mistake, his painting is clearly his own. He is his own artist.
Using familiar yet ambiguous symbols such as vibrating X marks, grids, zigzags and dots, colorful and on the move, Freed strikes a compositional balancing act between tension and harmony. His buoyant paintings blush and pulse with the tempo of contemporary life and float on the history of art.
Damon Freed holds an M.F.A. from Hunter College, City University of New York and a B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts, in New York where he graduated with honors.
