Inconspicuous Emissary, mixed media on canvas, 56″x48″
Larry Thomas creates paintings that are hybrids composed equally of paint and digital imagery. At first glance, the paintings seem abstract, full of rhythmic movement, texture and color. On closer inspection, subtle imagery and pattern emerge.
Thomas begins by digitally layering and uniting images from his vast collection of photographs and digital scans of objects that run the gamut from costume jewelry to plastic army men and barbed wire. He then orchestrates this complicated visual jetsam into a unified, dynamic composition made whole by paint.
Larry Thomas is a Professor and Chair of the Art Department, Johnson County Community College. His paintings are in the collections of The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, KS and The Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, Sedalia, MO and numerous corporate and private collections.
